DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

DIVERSITY

The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that everyone is unique and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies.

INCLUSION

The aim of inclusion is to embrace all people irrespective of race, gender, disability, medical or other need. It is about giving equal access and opportunities and getting rid of discrimination and intolerance (removal of barriers).

WHY

PFSB acknowledges that we can improve our efforts in becoming a more diverse and accommodating environment. We recently added a Diversity and Inclusion Committee in the Fall semester of 2021 which was a small step in dedicating ourselves to this effort. Focusing on diversity and inclusion will allow our members to learn more about each other’s culture’s differences, strengthen our organization’s ties, and provide knowledge that is useful beyond their Purdue education.

HOW

This committee dedicates it’s time to reaching out to other student organizations and creating a more knowledgeable board. We have biweekly D&I activities which aim to build awareness, knowledge, and skills surrounding D&I topics which can be as simple as talking about who you are. We also work to encourage PFSB members to share experiences and share others by bringing in outside members from the Purdue community to encourage members to support and attend campus events.
